MARKETING MANAGER
Department: Marketing
Position: Full-Time, non-exempt
Location: New York City, primarily in-person at Ensemble Studio Theatre, with the ability to occasionally work remotely pending office needs and the production calendar
Compensation: $55,000/year
Benefits: Health insurance and other benefits begin after 30-days of employment
Paid Time Off: 10 days per fiscal year, plus a week in July and a week in December when the office is closed. EST also currently observes “Summer Fridays”, determined annually.
MARKETING MANAGER JOB PROFILE
The Marketing Manager is the central figure of the marketing department at EST, overseeing the marketing operations in support of the activities of an off-Broadway organization. The Marketing Manager will supervise a department that includes two part-time roles (Community Engagement Manager and a to-be-hired Marketing Associate), and be supervised by the Managing Director.
The Marketing team is responsible for developing and implementing marketing strategies for a wide range of artistic programming in EST’s season, which currently includes 2 mainstage productions and 50+ developmental workshops, readings, and events via the EST/Sloan Project, Youngblood, and the Artistic Membership. The Marketing team also collaborates with the Co-Artistic Directors, Managing Director, and Development Director on audience development, community engagement, and fundraising efforts.
The Marketing Manager has regular interaction with members of the 600 strong EST membership of ensemble artists, as well as guest artists and other members of the wider New York City artistic community. This job will require some weekend and evening hours as necessitated by the production calendar.
This position has the potential to grow into a Director-level role with more supervisory responsibilities in future seasons. The first year (2025-26 season) will feature a slightly reduced workload for the Marketing Manager to allow time for long-term strategizing and building of the Marketing department.
The Marketing Manager’s major responsibilities include the below. Please note that we don’t expect any one person to possess all the skill sets listed; a Marketing Associate will be hired to support and complement this role.
Helping craft the narrative and brand of EST
Collaborate with EST’s leadership on big-picture strategies for telling the story of EST to the wider world and lifting up its community
Innovate on strategies for audience development, community outreach and engagement
Translate the brand of EST into visual and written communications and materials
Liaise with our press rep on strategies and pitches
Manage marketing budgets in collaboration with the marketing team
Artistic Programming
Create materials specific to each show or event, including print pieces (programs and mailed pieces) and digital content
Oversee process of creating key art for the season’s mainstage productions, including hiring and collaborating with outside designers when needed
Collaborate with creative teams for each production on the design and creation of lobby display materials when applicable
Hire and coordinate with photographers and videographers
Community Engagement & Audience Development
Collaborate with EST’s staff leadership and Community Engagement Manager on Audience Development strategies
Collaborate with affiliates and partners to support outreach and engagement and expand reach
Assist with execution of virtual and in-person events, creating content and assets as needed
Content Creation and Digital Campaigns
Create content, including images and written copy, within a cohesive institutional identity
Create or collaborate with other team members on e-blasts, brochures, and other marketing materials
Assist in photography, video editing, and creating content for social media
Create and manage email marketing campaigns
Maintain and update website content for accuracy
Analyze marketing data to identify trends, optimize campaign performance, and inform future strategies.
Digital Strategy & Social Media
Collaborate and innovate with the Community Engagement Manager to develop a robust social media strategy that expands audience engagement and brand awareness
Supervise the Community Engagement Manager in the implementation, performance tracking, and analysis of social media efforts
Stay up-to-date on social media trends
Fundraising/Development
Coordinate with the development department on strategy and promotion of fundraising campaigns, including the winter and spring appeals and other fundraising initiatives
Design materials for these campaigns, including print pieces and their digital equivalents.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Marketing or a related field and/or 3+ years of experience in marketing
Strong competency with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, with experience working in both digital and print
Experience with email marketing platforms such as Mailchimp (or similar email marketing), Squarespace, and Salesforce (or comparable CRM) highly valued
Experience working with print and direct mail projects, and knowledge of working with printers and mailhouses
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Be excellent at prioritizing and managing their own workflow
Be careful and trustworthy in handling sensitive and confidential information
Possess the ability to work under pressure with a variety of personalities in rapidly changing circumstances, leading with patience, professionalism, and a sense of humor
Embody and represent the mission and core values of EST to our artists, technicians, audience, and staff, which includes a dedication to anti-oppressive practices in the theatre and beyond and/or a willingness to learn and embody these practices
Be a thorough, proactive, and creative problem-solver with a rigorous attention to detail
Thrive in a small, collaborative, team-oriented environment while staying flexible in responding to a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with content creation and current digital marketing trends
Familiarity with social media marketing
Experience with analytics tracking (Meta Business Suite, Google Analytics), search engine optimisation (SEO), and pay-per-click (PPC) advertising and automation
